It is used primarily for tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, and tinea versicolor. Tolnaftate also is used in onychomycosis, in chronic fungal scalp infections, and prophylactically for tinea pedis. This drug was approved by the FDA in 1965. Mechanism of Action: Tolnaftate distorts hyphae and stunts mycelial growth in susceptible fungi. Contraindications/Precautions: None. Drug Interactions: No significant interactions. Adverse Reactions: Mild irritation. Available as: Aerosol, liquid tolnaftate 1% Available in bottles containing 59.2 ml, 90 ml, 118.3 ml, or 120 ml of liquid. Aerosol, powder tolnaftate 1% Available in 90-g, 100-g, 105-g, or 150-g containers Cream tolnaftate 1% Available in 15-g or 30-g containers. Gel, topical tolnaftate 1% Available in 15-g containers. Powder, topical tolnaftate 1% Available in 45-g, 56.7-g, 67.5-g, 70.9-g, or 90-g containers. Solution, topical tolnaftate 1% Available in 10-ml or 15-ml containers. Dosage: For the treatment of tinea cruris, tinea corporis, tinea manuum, tinea pedis caused by Tricophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, T. tonsurans, Microsporum canis, M. audouinii, and Epidermophyton floccosum; also effective in the treatment of tinea versicolor infections due to Malassezia furfur: Topical dosage: Adults and children: Apply 1% topical preparation 2�3 times per day for 2�4 weeks.
